A\ Typical Life Vol. 1: Jess & Nata

Do you ever wonder about who the people are that inhabit the spaces that you see? It’s fascinating to understand how spaces may shape lives or contrastingly, how our lives may shape our spaces. How do our careers, families, hobbies, and pets inform the way in which we live in and adorn our homes? A\ Typical Life is meant to scratch that voyeuristic itch. First up: Jess and Nata. These incredible clients of ours moved to Utah back in 2013 and settled into this 1963 mid-mod up in Olympus Cove. Visiting their home, we launched into eight questions that would help bridge the gap between the residence and the residents.

A\T: Ok guys, lets get started. Who lives here? Who lives in this house?

Nata: Mostly this guy... (gestures to cat “Fat Amy”)

Jess: It’s her house.

Nata: It’s pretty much her house, yeah.

A\T: What do you guys do?

Nata: I am a data engineer for American Express. Big nerd stuff.

Jess: I’m a finance guy.

A\T: And what else do you guys do?

Jess: She's hyper creative. Does all the photography and fiber art and creative stuff.  And I'm a climber. Rock climber.

A\T: What’s your favorite part of the house?

Nata: This room. 100%. Like, hands down. So thank you.

Jess: That's probably my place, too. It's my favorite part of the house.

Nata: It went from a space we didn't use to one we sit in every single day. Like, spend most of our time is in here, for sure. So that was huge. You know what I mean? So thank you.

A\T: What's one thing you'd like to change about your house?

Jess: The bathrooms. We'll be talking to you soon.

A\T: What are three words to describe the vibe of your house? You can each take a turn.

Nata: Moody...

Jess: Vampire Sex Den.

Nata: I agree, you win.

A\T: If your house were a person, who would it be?

Nata: Shit. Why didn't you give me these questions ahead of time?

Jess: They did! They were sent like, two weeks ago.

Nata: Oh! Why don't I read email?

Jess: I have my answer.

Nata: What’s your answer?

Jess: Mine’s Rick Ross

Nata: Mine, honestly, would be like Robert Smith of the Cure. That's where I'm at, I'm pretty sure. I don't know it's because he's kind of glam, but he's also dark and moody. So, I would say it's him.

A\T: So guys, is your personal style reflected in your home?

Nata: *laughs* Yeah. Yessss. You nailed it. We align, I think, really well. You definitely push us a little bit more, I think, than what we're...But in a good way. Like..

Jess: Yeah, you helped find us.

A\T: What mood does your home evoke?

Jess: Mood? Umm. I think it's just mood-y, like all the moods. Like it's dark and quiet and sexy and fun.

Nata: I do feel like it's sexy.

Jess: And vibrant. So, it's all the moods.

Nata: It's fun, too. I think that I like that it's fun. Because I would have just made everything black. And that feels a little stark, you know what I mean? So there's like a lot of warmth, which I really like. And then there's this... *touches wallpaper*

A\T: Yes, that's a good part! What's your favorite part about working with Atypical?

Nata: (laughs) Lauren Bald!

Jess: The finished product. I think it's just incredible.

Nata: Also, like, the collaboration. Because what I think is the most important to me is like not losing ourselves either. Because this is a lot of you, but it's a lot of us. It's kind of like meeting in the middle. So I just liked how much, like, with all your mood boards and all the things you put together, how we could work together to like come up with something really, really cool.

Jess: The planning phase was so fun.

A\T: Okay last question. Any life advice?

Nata: Like generally?

A\T: Yeah.

Nata: Hmmm. Don't take life too seriously. You'll never get out of it alive. That's like a Van Wilder quote?

Jess: That's. That's Ryan Reynolds. *laughs*

Nata: *laughs* That's Ryan Reynolds. Um, yeah, just have fun. You know? It's like we're just on this planet for so short. Might as well cash some happy checks along the way.

Jess: And get to know yourself. It's easy to overlook the uncomfortable, insecure parts of yourself, but those really tell you who you are and really inform you about yourself and like get to know all of it. Like dig in and really like yourself.

A\T: Perfect. Love it. And cut!
